Question: Can STU PID be renamed to something else?
BIA has gotten feedback on why the Student PID is called STU PID. As analysts, does anyone know why this is called STU PID? Is there a better name for this field?
Answer
Beats me…I've been wondering for years.
In addition to STU_PID, Data Warehouse also has PID, PID9, and PID10.
My vote, FWIW, is for SAH to have one and only one name for the ID field…namely, ID (with all due respect to Freudians!).
I also think we now have a wonderful opportunity to standardize the way we refer to PID, and am in favor of not using 'STU_PID' as that standard. My vote would be to simply use 'PID', though I'd be willing to embrace 'ID' if others are on board.
Can we not use ID? I'm concerned about auto linking wiht SQL servers and the ID Column... PID could be good though!
Would also favor PID as it helps distinguish from employee ID. Would note that academics have both a PID and EID. Would further note that it might be helpful to distinguish between student PID and instructor PID.
Why can't we have "StudentID", "InstructorID", "EmployeeID," "AffiliateID", etc. Does everything have to have "PID" in the name? Also, once we get new EIDs, then maybe there will also need to be "EmployeeIDPrevious" or something.
I'm also in favor of something more specific than ID. PID is just how it's labeled in ISIS.
If we are considering splitting StudentID from InstructorID, keep in mind those values will be the same for people who have both types of records as it's the exact same field in ISIS. I'm fine with labeling them differently for ease of use, presuming we add both as related terms to PID in the IGC.
I'd like to echo Christopher about being in favor of a more specific ID. Having a descriptive ID such as suggested by Patricia's examples would make identifying the ID quicker and easier. Definitely in favor of not using STU_PID for our students and writing it out as StudentID, for various reasons.
Please vote on one of the two main suggestions below. Deadline to vote is Wednesday 11/14 at 1pm.
Student ID or Student PID
Renee: There's the ISIS internal ID, and whatever internal identifier or identifiers that future student info systems will use (whenever those happen).
I like "Student PID" because it uses the old terminology that people are used to. For the other ones (Instructor, Employee, etc), I like "ID".
Student PID would be my vote. I agree to few comments above that using ID is too generic when connecting with other RDBMS. Also, given that we will have Instructor PID and Employee PID, using Student PID will clearly identify as to who the PID(Personal Identification number) belongs to(student, instructor or employee).
Hello - The final result is Student PID. We'll add the renaming to a future sprint.
